Typically, MDF is used for manufacturing furniture, finishing materials like flooring and for decorative purposes in interior design. However, its most popular use is in the production of kitchen cabinets. Most kitchen cabinets make use of both solid wood and MDF elements. MDF is commonly utilized for the doors and interior paneling.
To build a cabinet, start by cutting panels for the bottom and sides out of MDF, plywood, or another type of laminate. Then, cut 4 pieces of 1 by 6 lumber to the same width as the bottom panel for the front, back, and top brace panels. Next, cut 4 facing panels for the front of the cabinet.
Fine Finish. Plywood or lumber show grain lines when finished, but MDF finishes without a trace of grain. Nothing finishes smoother and flatter than MDF due to its dense nature, hard face and lack of grain lines. For the one of the best finishes available on almost any cabinet, use MDF and colored varnish or lacquer.
That way once the 1/4″ back and the 3/4″ face frame are attached, the cabinet is exactly 24″ deep. I almost always build cabinets and built-ins out of 3/4″ plywood (or MDF). Faceframe width is generally 1 1/2″, thickness is generally 3/4″, these dimensions are what the ACTUAL size of a 1×2 is.
To build a kitchen cabinet, start by cutting the side and bottom panels out of some MDF or plywood. Then, cut 4 panels out of 1 by 6 lumber for the base panels and top bracers, and cut 4 more panels for the face of the cabinet.
MDF finds its most common use in kitchen cabinets. Most kitchen cabinets comprise of both solid wood and MDF elements. MDF Board is usually found on the doors and interior paneling for the reasons stated above (easier to paint, easier to clean, does not warp and so on). But it is not just the kitchen where MDF finds its use.
You can make cabinet doors out of MDF even if the cabinets are made of plywood, wood or some other material. MDF always has to be painted, but you can choose a color that blends with the cabinet material, even if it is stained or unstained wood.
Okay, let’s hear ’em—your excuses for not making those cabinets you could use everywhere from your kitchen to your workshop: “Oooh, they have doors.” Relax. You can make doors using just your tablesaw and a general-purpose blade to cut the joints. “But…but, they have drawers!”
